What is NHS? The National Honor Society (NHS) and National Junior Honor Society (NJHS) are the nation's premier organizations established to recognize outstanding high school and middle level students. More than just an honor roll, NHS and NJHS serve to honor those students who have demonstrated excellence in the areas of Scholarship, Leadership, Service, and Character (and Citizenship for NJHS). These characteristics have been associated with membership in the organization since their beginnings in 1921 and 1929. Today, it is estimated that more than one million students participate in activities of the NHS and NJHS. NHS and NJHS chapters are found in all 50 states, the District of Columbia, Puerto Rico, many U.S. Territories, and Canada. Chapter membership not only recognizes students for their accomplishments, but challenges them to develop further through active involvement in school activities and community service. Prospective Members On February 5, 2010 any sophomore, junior, or senior who has a cumulative GPA at or above 3.5 will be given an application. It is up to the student whether or not they want to fill out the application. The application will look similar to the one below. Once all applications have been received (February 19, 2010), all AHS teachers will be given a confidential evaluation sheet. They will rate each candidate on the basis of service, leadership, and character. A sample evaluation sheet is included below. Once the evaluations have been received, 5 anonymous AHS faculty members will meet and vote on the candidates. At this time they will be either accepted or rejected. After all applications have been turned in, the students should receive a letter stating whether or not they have been accepted within 3-4 weeks. Upon being accepted, the students must attend an induction ceremony and attend all meetings ending the 2009-2010 school year.
